The Cathedral

The Cathedral

Cathedral

The Cathedral was designed on the pattern of an Early English Gothic church. It was built of native Kansas stone and is cruciform, or cross, shaped. Its plan includes a choir, nave, transepts, and choir aisles.

Rood Beam: The Rood was a gift from Bishop Griswold and depicts the Crucified Lord, the Blessed Virgin, and the Beloved Disciple.

High Altar: The High Altar is the main area of focus in the Cathedral. Sunday morning Mass and special services are celebrated at the High Altar.

St. Mary's Altar

St. Mary’s Altar: St. Mary’s Altar is in the north transept. Weekday services are usually held at this altar.

Blessed Sacrament Chapel: This small chapel is used for private services and meditations. It contains a Columbarium where the cremains of the faithful are interred.

Stained Glass Windows: There are thirty-four magnificent stained glass windows in the Cathedral. There is even one in the Ladies Restroom. Pictures and a complete history of each window can be found in the book Christ Cathedral: A Priceless Heritage. For purchase information, contact the Cathedral office at 785-827-4440.

Stations of the Cross

Stations of the Cross: The Stations of the Cross were created and given by Fr. Willys Neustrom in 1991. They were initially located outdoors in the Memorial Park. However, vandalism and the weather took their toll. In 2009 they were removed, cleaned, preserved, and remounted in the Cathedral. Services of the Stations of the Cross will be held the first Friday of each month at 5:30, and every Friday during Lent.

Organ: Christ Cathedral has one of the finest musical instruments in the area. The classical pipe organ has been the centerpiece of a number of concerts enjoyed by the whole community.

Bells from the Carillon

Carillon: The Cathedral has a full carillon of 23 bells. These bells play daily at 10 AM, 12 noon, and 6 PM.

Parish Hall

Common Area: The Common area is used for large meetings, receptions, and other parish functions including the Coffee Hour after the Sunday 10:00 service and potluck dinners.

Children’s Chapel/Worship Center: The stage area of the Parish Hall has been turned into a Children’s Chapel for use during Sunday School. The Rose family gave a Triptych to the Cathedral as a memorial to be used behind the High Altar. Over the years, the Triptych started showing wear after being moved constantly. In 2009, the Triptych was repaired and framed and now serves as a stunning backdrop to the altar and original church cross in the Children’s Chapel.

Kitchen: The kitchen is included in many of the activities in the Parish Hall. It has been remodeled several times and is capable of being used for both small functions and large catered affairs.

The Parish Library

Library: The library contains many texts on the church, religion, and related topics. It also contains small artifacts of the Cathedral. And it is often used as a small meeting room.

Apartment: A small, self-sufficient apartment is located above the Parish Hall. It is used by the clergy.

Education Building

Cathedral Offices: The Dean and the Cathedral staff have their offices in the Education Building.

Sunday School Rooms: The Education Building houses Sunday School meeting rooms, a space for the youth group to meet, and a nursery.

Montessori School: The lower level of the Education Building also houses the Christ Cathedral Montessori School.

The Gazebo and Garden

Grounds

Memorial Park: Memorial Park is located south of the Education Building. It contains a walkway with benches for quiet meditation, a large crucifix, an outdoor Columbarium, and a gazebo. The gazebo is used for the Blessing of the Palms on Palm Sunday and the St. Francis Day Blessing of Pets, as well as for picnics and other fellowship get-togethers.

Playground: Alyse Weishaar, a youth of the Cathedral, decided that our small playground was not sufficient for our children. After presenting a proposal to the vestry, she obtained enough money from donations and grants to install a new state of the art, fenced in play area. Now, not only the cathedral children, but also the children from Ashby House and the surrounding neighborhood and those who attend the Montessori school, have a safe place to play.

Outdoor Columbarium: Between the Cathedral and the Parish Hall is another outdoor Columbarium. With shade trees and benches, it is another excellent site for quiet meditation.
